Workshop Program
The workshop program gives the most updated preliminary schedule for the workshop.
Registration forms
Logistics, Travel and Housing information
Location: The Workshop on Electronic Structure 2019 will be held at the:
National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA Building)
1205 W. Clark Street
Urbana, Illinois 61801
Travel information: Getting to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois
Champaign-Urbana, Illinois is located about:
- 3 hours from O'Hare Airport in Chicago,
- 2.5 hours from the Indianapolis International Airport,
- 55 minutes from the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington, Illinois.
By air: Most people would prefer to fly directly to Champaign-Urbana. (Currently American Airlines and United Airlines fly to CU.) The airport code for Champaign-Urbana, Illinois is CMI; the airport name is the University of Illinois Willard Airport. Most people take taxis between the airport and campus locations. It takes about 8 minutes to get from the airport to campus, in a car.
By air + shuttle from O'Hare: If your airline doesn't fly into Champaign-Urbana, you might consider taking a Peoria Charter bus from O'Hare (peoriacharter.com/) (or other locations in Chicago, the suburbs, or Bloomington-Normal). The charter buses run several times daily from a few locations at O'Hare to 3-4 campus locations, and currently cost $32 one way, if you reserve in advance. Schedule: peoriacharter.com/images/market_routes/cu.pdf. The campus stops called "Altgeld Hall" or "ISR" (Illinois Street Residence hall) are 7-12 minute walk from the workshop location and housing.
By train from Chicago: The Amtrak trains intersect with the public transit at Illinois Terminal (https://mtd.org/inside/illinois-terminal/), in downtown Champaign. There are public buses running often between Illinois Terminal and the University of Illinois campus. Note: the Amtrak departs from Union Station in Chicago, and runs fewer times daily than the Peoria Charter bus.
Getting around town
Once on campus, you will not need a car and will likely be able to walk to all the workshop events. The Hendrick House and several other hotels and restaurants are less than a 12-minute walk from the workshop location, the NCSA building. While there will be parking spots near every location, many campus meters have 2-hour limits and so it is a nuisance to keep recharging a parking meter. And to explore further, the Urbana downtown is about 25 minutes’ walk and the Champaign downtown is about 35 minutes’ walk
Alternatively, our local mass transit (bus) system is excellent and very reasonably priced. (https://mtd.org/)
Biking is yet another option. In 2018, the University started its public bike system. You can rent a bike for 50 cents per trip, using a smartphone (bike.illinois.edu/resources/where-to-get-a-bicycle).
Weather: The May weather is typically 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit, mild but sometimes hot and often rainy.
Workshop Check-in:
Workshop Check-in: Before the workshop on Sunday night, you can check-in at the Hendrick House. During the workshop hours, you can check-in at the workshop:
- Sunday, May 19, 2019 : 6pm – 8pm Hendrick House Dormitory
- Monday and Tuesday, May 20 - 21, 2019 : 9am - 5pm NCSA Building
- Campus Map of Workshop locations (.pdf)
Wireless Internet Access: The University of Illinois campus Wi-FI internet access is available for free during the workshop. At Hendrick House, Wi-FI is available in the common areas (lounge, lobby). For the sleeping rooms, please request an ethernet cable for your computer.
Housing Check-in: The Hendrick House is located about 10 minutes' walk from the workshop location, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. The rate per night is $32-50, depending on your room preference. Please see the Housing Information for more details..
- Check-in: Sunday, May 19, 2019: 1pm – 12am (midnight)
- Check-out: Wednesday, May 22, 2019: 2pm – 5pm
For those arriving outside of the above check-in times, there is a Resident Advisor on call, as needed. The phone number will posted on the door.
